In Bedford, Students Become Teachers
For the 32,000 residents within Bedford Public School District, the dedication of local educators has left a powerful impact.
“One of the students was very, very successful, scored very high and had amazing computer skills,” said Cherie Reed, director of Adult Education and Enrichment programs at Bedford. “I wanted to promote his success and decided to hire that student to work with our students as a computer technician. So this former student is going to be in the computer lab helping.” (more) |

Literacy Center Shows Strength in Words
Though the Literacy Center of West Michigan has been open since 1986, the staff and programs offered only began to significantly bloom in the last few years.
When the doors first opened to the formerly known Kent County Literacy Council, there was only an executive director and secretary on staff, in addition to the organization’s board members. Space was shared in a Grand Rapids public library and their mission was to train tutors who would be sent to community education programs throughout Kent County. (more) |

Taking Adult Education to the Students
With so much room to cover, cutting back on community education sites is just not an option for those at North Menominee County Community Schools.
“We try to go to them,” said Adult and Community Education Director Sheila Veraghen. “We are geographically very large. We cover two counties, so we have many small sites. We partner with a lot of different agencies to bring adult (education) to these very rural areas.” (more) |

Changes Made to SB-CEU Awards
On January 1, the Michigan Department of Education began their transition to a Secure Central Registry (SCR), which will house all State Board Continuing Education Units (SB-CEUs) awarded after the first of this year. Through the SCR, educators can view all SB-CEUs awarded to them after January 1, 2010. The SCR will be online in mid-February and will be available on a 24/7 basis, equipped with a virtual Help Desk to answer questions.
With implementation of the SCR, significant changes have been made in the way SB-CEUs are awarded. It is important to make sure you are aware of these changes by viewing the MDE document SB-CEUs and SCR. |
