This program is presented in partnership with New Readers Press.

Most HSE test questions are at Webb’s Depth of Knowledge Levels 2 and 3. This professional development will explore how we can help our students successfully solve these cognitively challenging questions.  Presenters will share teaching strategies for expanded learning and reaching learners at multi levels.  In addition, it will focus on differentiated instructional strategies and goal setting to help learners find high school equivalency success. Participants will learn an evidence-based teaching strategy, the think aloud, that shows students how to think through these tricky test questions.

Facilitator:

Steve Schmidt is an adult education consultant and moderator of the LINCS Reading and Writing Community Group. He has worked in adult basic education for over 29 years as an instructor, program director, professional developer, and author. Steve has an Ed.S. in Adult and Developmental Education from Appalachian State University. He has authored several resources for New Readers Press including Writing for the GED® Test Book 4.

Since 2008, Greg Stultz has served as an educational sales consultant and product trainer for New Readers Press, the publishing division of ProLiteracy. Greg’s prior work experience in adult education includes eight years in Japan as a teacher-trainer and ELL instructor.

.75                          10:00am– 10:45am: Instructional Strategies for HSE Success

In this section we will review key instructional strategies for high school equivalency success.  The presenter(s) will review important strategies around instructional design as well as student learning styles.  In addition, the presenter(s) will review correlating content and subject area educational tools in alignment to the state approved high school equivalency tests in Michigan.

.25                          10:45am-11:00am: Curriculum Alignment

The presenter(s) will review curriculum resources around major publishing tools and their alignment to high school equivalency test competencies.  Participants will walk away with a comprehensive list of high school equivalency competencies and correlated instructional support tools and strategies.
