Description:

The 2023 MACAE Virtual Pre-Conference will be an opportunity for alternative and adult education instructional staff to participate in quality professional development.  Four sessions will offer insights into working with English Language Learners and Math learners who need additional assistance.  In addition there will be an overview of adult education trends as well.  Finally, a presentation will encompass problem based learning integration into classroom and the strategies for successful implementation.

0.5                          9:00am-9:30am: Adult Education Opportunities Across Michigan

MACAE Leadership will lead a brief overview of the significant updates in adult education policy for 2023-2024. We will highlight recent changes, policy investments and help break down the future of adult learning in Michigan.

 

 

1.0                          9:30am– 10:30am: Problem Based Learning: A Tool for Learner Success

What is problem based learning? We will examine how problem based learning is being explored as an effective instructional strategy for youth and adult learners.  We will share concrete examples of how it is being utilized in practical settings. Participants will walk away with examples of how they can begin to employ problem based learning practices in their program design and instruction.

1.0                          10:45am-11:45am: Getting Started with Math

Are you looking for strategies to helping adult learners get started with math instruction for successful completion? What are some of the best ways to evaluate and help accelerate learners? This session will provide several strategies to use with math-anxious or math-frustrated students in Adult Ed. In addition it will provide practical strategies for how to organize effective strategies for instruction to help math learners.  We will share some tools for setting up your classroom instruction and organizational of units.  This presentation will help give the teacher strategies to bridge the gap.

1.0                          12:30pm-1:30pm: Igniting Change: Empowering Adult Learners as Education Advocates
Navigating the landscape of adult education demands more than just knowledge acquisition—it demands the ability to champion one’s own learning journey. This session delves into innovative methodologies and proven strategies to empower adult learners as advocates for the very education that shapes their lives. By honing their skills in storytelling, public speaking, and community engagement, adult learners can effectively advocate for resources, support, and policy changes that fuel the growth of adult education. Join me to explore how fostering a culture of advocacy not only empowers individual learners but also strengthens the foundation of adult education as a whole. Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of a dynamic conversation that amplifies the voices driving change in adult education.  Participants will walk away with practical strategies to enhance authentic student voice in program design and instruction.
